Bison graze the open pasture at Wildlife Prairie Park in Hanna City, close enough that the trail loop along the fence keeps the herd in view the whole way. Elk work the same grass, and from the Legacy Cabin decks they look like they belong in the field. Spend a morning, leave, and come back later, and the herd will have moved along the fence, you on dirt and them on grass.
A campervan does not sleep here, so you visit during the day and send the van to Jubilee College State Park for the night. As of September 2026, overnight at the park is tent camping on primitive sites with no water and no electricity, booked by phone, email, or walk-in. Eighteen sites is the whole overnight, and none of them take a vehicle. Showers sit about a quarter-mile from the tents, and sleeping in a cabin there is a lodging stay looking at the same pasture you walked.
Come back in the morning if you want another pass around the pasture before you spend the day on Jubilee's trails or on the sand prairie.
Jubilee College State Park
Horses and mountain bikes share more than forty miles of trail at Jubilee College State Park, between Kickapoo and Brimfield off US-150. The campground is how you stay to ride, and how you stay close to the pasture.
The first night is the electric loop. Class A sites come with power, showers, and a dump station on graveled pads, with Class C sites in the mix. The standard season runs April 15 through November 1, and Coyote Cove stays open in winter on Class B electric. Reserve through ExploreMoreIL.
You sleep in the van on that electric loop. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, RV rentals in Illinois are the step up.
Before you leave town, Grandview Drive in Peoria Heights runs the bluff above the Illinois River. On a clear day the valley opens under the road, and there is no overnight on the bluff.
Sand Ridge State Forest
Southwest of Peoria the ground changes. Sand Ridge State Forest opens into wind-shaped dunes and prickly-pear sand prairie inside oak, hickory, and pine. It is Illinois's largest state forest. The dunes sit in the trees, and prickly pear comes up on open sand, then the oak and pine close back in.
Fall is the season to camp here. Pine Campground is primitive Class C, with water, pit-vault toilets, and fire pads, and no full hookups, on the US-136 run toward Forest City. Backcountry sites on the trail system need a permit from forest headquarters before you use them.
The Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive fills the same county on the first two full weekends of October, so those weekends compete for the same vans and the same sites.
On that southwest loop, Emiquon and Chautauqua put a wooded bluff-line boardwalk and observation platforms over a restored floodplain lake, with eagles in winter and shorebirds on the mudflats. Emiquon lists no camping, and Chautauqua does not either. Summer on the river bottoms is humid, with mosquitoes at the wetlands.
