The night is up at Anthony Chabot Family Campground, on a eucalyptus ridge in the Oakland hills with Lake Chabot below it. Sites come up on a rolling twelve-week window through ReserveAmerica and have to be reserved at least two business days out, so a summer weekend is worth claiming the week it opens. The gate locks at 10 p.m. and nothing gets in after that, which makes your arrival time part of the booking. Book the site first and the van around it.
The lake sits at the bottom of the ridge, with a paved shoreline loop above the dam you can walk in the morning or paddle if you'd rather be on the water.
Mount Diablo and the Rock City sandstone
Point the van up Mount Diablo for the day and the road tops out at a 3,849-foot summit, with the Farallones off to the west past the Golden Gate and the Sierra crest to the east. Lower down off South Gate Road, Rock City is a run of wind-carved sandstone you scramble through, Elephant Rock and Sentinel Rock among them. The mountain's own campgrounds cap trailers and motorhomes at 20 feet, so most vans do Diablo as a day trip and sleep back at Chabot.
The same Redwood Road that climbs to the campground drops the other way into Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, a canyon of 150-foot second-growth coast redwoods, day-use only. Chabot itself takes rigs up to 35 feet, so a group that finds a van tight can size up and still fit its pads, and the wider RV rentals across California start there.
Summer fire season on the Chabot ridge
The East Bay hills sit inland of the San Francisco fog, so the ridge runs dry and hot through the summer, which is also the fire window: the district posts fire-danger levels from May through October, and smoking is out in every park. Lake Chabot is a standby drinking-water reservoir, so swimming is never allowed and a blue-green algae caution advisory was posted as of August 2026. Fall, once the first rain has come through, is the easy stretch for a van up here.
Point Reyes, Yosemite, and Sonoma from an Oakland base
