Whistlers Campground sits on Highway 93N just south of the Jasper townsite, and it is the night to lock down first. Wapiti is the overflow, a little farther south along the Athabasca River. Get one of the two on the calendar before you sort out the van, because Jasper's frontcountry inventory is the harder half to get in 2026. From either pad, the Icefields Parkway is one day and Maligne Lake Road is another.
Whistlers still takes a full-size van, showers come with the site fee, and the loops have less shade than they did before the 2024 fire. Booking runs through Parks Canada's reservation service. As of August 2026, the park recovery page puts 77 percent of pre-fire frontcountry sites back in service, and Wabasso is still closed to the public, so leave that one off the list.
Town does not need the van. Connector Trail 12 runs 4.7 km from Whistlers and Wapiti to Hazel Avenue and Connaught Drive, and Jasper Transit stops at both campgrounds. Pyramid Road and Pyramid Beach cap vehicles at 7.5 m (Parks Canada RV restrictions). If you need more beds than a van has, RV rentals in Jasper is the other page, with the caveat that those lake-road limits bite harder the longer you go.
Valley of the Five Lakes is the kettle-pond walk south of town, open again for summer 2026 apart from 2.7 km of Trail 9 at the south end of First Lake (Parks Canada recovery). Elk work the valley floor. If they are on the road, stay in the van and wait them out.
Summer here is short. July and August are the crush, and the nights can still drop below freezing in the middle of it. The Canada Strong Pass waives park admission and takes 25 percent off Parks Canada camping from mid-June to early September 2026, which puts more people against inventory that was already thin.
Icefields Parkway south from Jasper
Athabasca Falls is 30 km down Highway 93N, where the river drops 23 m through quartzite into a short canyon. RV stalls are limited and the rock stays slick in the mist, so keep behind the railings. Sunwapta Falls comes at 54 km, and Parks Canada does not recommend that lot for large rigs.
At 104 km the Columbia Icefield sits across from the Discovery Centre, Athabasca Glacier on the far side and bare moraine where the ice has pulled back. Stay behind the barriers on the tongue. For a night on the parkway itself, the Icefields Centre RV campground is first-come dry parking with no water and no fires, and Wilcox nearby is first-come, unserviced, under 27 ft (Parks Canada camping).
Fill the tank in Jasper. There is no gas between town and Saskatchewan River Crossing, about 153 km south, and no year-round cell on the parkway (Icefields Parkway). Download the maps before you leave the valley.

Maligne Lake Road for the day
Maligne Lake Road is a day out, not a move. There is no frontcountry campground at the lake, so the pad at Whistlers or Wapiti stays yours. Medicine Lake sits on the way, a summer flood that drains through sinkholes and goes missing by fall. The lake at the end is 22 km of water with Spirit Island 14 km up it, boat or paddle only, no road to the island (Parks Canada). RV parking at the lake is limited, which is one more reason a compact van is the easier vehicle up here.
Maligne Canyon is closed for the 2026 season, and so is Cavell Road. Both are fire-slope closures with debris-flow risk after the tree loss, and Parks Canada's recovery page has not posted an opening date. Cross them off, give the day to the lake, and come back down to the valley.
