South Beach to Harris Beach on the Oregon coast

State park campgrounds from South Beach to Harris Beach stay open through winter. That makes the central and south coast an overnight you can use in the snow months. East of the Cascades the trip turns to a glacial lake under the Wallowas, a white playa below Steens Mountain, and the banded claystone of the Painted Hills.

Oregon campervan trips on the coast and east of the Cascades

At South Beach you sleep behind the dunes with the Pacific loud at night, then walk a wide wet line in the morning. Beverly Beach, near Newport, is the creekside night. Sea stacks show up as you work south on US-101 toward Bandon and Brookings.

Cape Perpetua, just south of Yachats, keeps old-growth over the trail until it drops to the tidepools. You come out on the rocks and spend the afternoon in the pools, then keep south on US-101.

Bandon is the Coquille River mouth, with stacks in the water you can walk toward at low tide. Bullards Beach State Park is the overnight on the north shore.

Samuel H. Boardman, along US-101 between Gold Beach and Brookings, is day use only, viewpoints and short walks with no overnight in the corridor. Harris Beach at Brookings is the last improved loop on the stretch, redwood on the hills behind the sand. Walk that beach and sleep in the loop.

Reserve South Beach, Beverly Beach, Bullards Beach, or Harris Beach before you book the van. Oregon State Parks takes reservations up to six months in advance. You can run this stretch in any month.

As of September 2026, Samuel H. Boardman has a fire-restrictions notice on the park page. A forest-wide camping restriction is posted on Cape Perpetua's Forest Service campground page as of September 2026.

The north-coast beaches around Cannon Beach are a Cannon Beach trip, and the Oregon Dunes at Florence go with Eugene.

Silver Falls State Park

Water sheets off the lip at South Falls and the trail walks you behind it, canyon walls close on both sides. You stay in the canyon, wet rock and spray, then climb back out to the van. The night is the improved campground loop.

The tent loop runs May through October. As of September 2026, the Winter Falls Trail and trailhead are closed until further notice for landslide damage, and the rest of the canyon trail stays open. If you need more sleeping space than a campervan, RVs for rent in Oregon take that improved loop.

The western Columbia River Gorge is the Portland overnight. Mt Hood is the mountain and the ski season, and Hillsboro holds Stub Stewart State Park on the west side.

Wallowa Lake and Hells Canyon

Wallowa Lake stays cold in summer, glacial water with the Wallowa Mountains filling the far shore. You sleep at the state park campground on the shore, and Joseph is the town at the north end. Wilderness trails and a day on the water both start from that loop.

Hat Point is a day drive from the lake, and the Hells Canyon walls drop away under you. Camping at the lake stays open all year, and roads get plowed to the open loops as maintenance allows. Water at individual sites is shut off October through mid-May, and some restroom buildings close for winter.

Steens Mountain and the Alvord Desert

You roll onto white salt with Steens Mountain's fault-block escarpment standing over the far edge. Nights on the playa edge have no hookups and no pads. Page Springs, near Frenchglen, is the primitive campground at the base of the mountain, first-come with no reservations, with trails along the Blitzen River.

Get there on OR-78 out of Burns, then East Steens Road. The Steens Mountain loop road is high-elevation gravel, closed by snow through late spring.

The Painted Hills

Late afternoon hits the Painted Hills and the claystone bands go red, tan, and black. Mitchell is the nearest town. Camping is not allowed inside the monument.

Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site is the night, and a base for the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. Water hookups shut off late October through March, and mosquitoes are especially active May through July.

The Cascade Lakes Highway is a Bend trip. Crater Lake is a Medford trip.
