Mornings on South Padre Island belong to the Gulf side, where the surf breaks on soft sand below the palms and dunes of the island's southern tip. Winter Texans come for the month or the whole season, November through March, and stay parked the whole time. Families fit a week into the same stretch, with the beach close and nothing to pack up until the last morning.
The island is the whole itinerary, so the real choice is where the rig sleeps and which water it faces. The winter week runs out of two places, a resort on the bay side and the county park at the tip, with one day across the causeway for birds and alligators.
South Padre Island KOA Holiday, bay on three sides
At the South Padre Island KOA Holiday the bay is in view on three sides, and the causeway span runs across the water from the bay-side sites. The pool stays open year-round, which keeps the kids busy between beach runs. For the rig, the KOA lists pull-thru sites with full hookups and 50-amp service, the setup a family motorhome wants for a week of air conditioning, showers and a coffee maker that never trips a breaker.
The one day worth leaving the island for is across the causeway at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, open sunrise to sunset with the entrance fee paid on Recreation.gov. Birds crowd the feeding stations along the visitor center trails, and the lake-shore trail has a deck built for watching alligators. There's no overnight for a rig at the refuge, so it's a day out with the island site waiting at the end of it.
Isla Blanca Park and the county's outside-gate sites
Ask winter Texans where to park on the beach and Isla Blanca, the Cameron County park at the island's southern tip, comes up first. As of September 2026, the main park is under renovation. The county's booking page put the start of construction at October 2025 with about a year of work, and keeps 43 RV sites open outside the park, south of Dirty Al's Restaurant.
Those outside-gate sites are the Isla Blanca you can book for the winter. The county's Andy Bowie Park shows closed for renovations with no reopening date, as of September 2026. If it's only the two of you, something smaller covers the same beach winter with less to level.
Winter Texans, Spring Break, and the race for island sites
South Padre fills in layers. Winter Texans arrive in November and hold their sites for months, then March brings Spring Break, when the island's pads and the RVs in the listings get claimed for the same handful of weeks. Reserve the site first and the rig second, since the dates you can get on the island decide the dates of the rental.
Outside winter the island turns hot and humid, and a full-hookup site running the air becomes the point of the trip. If the island is booked solid for your dates, the Texas RV page lays out the rest of the coast.
