Marsh grass thins to sand and then to Gulf surf where the Colorado River gives out at Matagorda Bay Nature Park. A pier strung with lights reaches over the water, and horseback riders work the shoreline. Days go to a kayak in the wetlands, a line off that pier and long stretches on the beach.
The motorhome earns its keep here by staying put. It sits on one pad beside a palm tree all week, plugged in with the air running through the humid afternoons, and the kids come back from the beach to a kitchen, a shower and their own beds. By midweek the rhythm is beach, pier, dinner, sunset, and nobody has to pack a thing to repeat it.
Booking a waterfront pad at Matagorda Bay Nature Park
The Lower Colorado River Authority runs the park, about 100 miles southwest of Houston, with 34 full-hookup RV sites on 30 and 50 amp service. Of those, 15 face the water and 5 are pull-throughs, so the pad you want decides how early you book. Reserve it through lcraparks.com first, then match the motorhome to the site.
Every RV site has full hookups, which means no midweek dump run and nothing to ration. Galveston is the other Gulf beach week from this side of Houston, busier and built around the seawall and the Strand, and the Houston RV page covers that one.
Texas Renaissance Festival weekends at Todd Mission
Autumn at the Texas Renaissance Festival is a two-part weekend: a day on the Fields of New Market and a night in the campground at Todd Mission. The campground is a 230-acre meadow of rigs and tents, the roads crawl along at 5 mph, and the bonfire is where everyone ends up once the festival lets out.
The festival runs on weekends through the autumn season, plus Thanksgiving Friday. General camping is first-come, while water and electric hookup sites and dry RV sites are by reservation, and a dump station on site handles the tanks for anyone on a dry pad.
Those reserved sites go fastest in October and November, the same weekends plenty of Houston-area families want a motorhome for a fall trip. The festival pad and the rig compete for the same dates, so reserve the site and the rental together, and early.
Summer Breeze USA RV Resort in Brookshire
Some weeks the family wants a pool more than a coastline, and Summer Breeze USA, on the Brookshire side of Katy, is set up for exactly that. Rigs settle onto concrete pads, afternoons go to the pool, and the hot tub is the last stop of the night once the kids are worn out.
Every site comes with sewer, water and electric, and pull-throughs are among the site types. The resort's guests-only water park is closed for the 2026 season, with the pool and hot tub open until December, as of September 2026.
As at Matagorda, the site comes first, because its length decides how big a motorhome or towable you can bring. Some towables in the listings are delivered to the pad and set up by their owners, so the family never tows, though that's arranged listing by listing.
Stephen F. Austin State Park on the Brazos, the Katy Prairie and Lake Somerville suit a smaller rig and a two-person trip better, and the Katy campervan page has those nights. Brazos Bend State Park is on the Houston campervan page.
