On a summer afternoon Lake Gaston's coves fill with pontoons and wakeboard boats, and from the wooded campsites that run down to the shore at Littleton you can watch the whole parade from a camp chair. The lake runs 34 miles along the North Carolina and Virginia line, about 20,000 acres of water with some 350 miles of shoreline folded into coves, so a boat can spend the week finding new water.
Rigs here tend to stay put. The motorhome or trailer goes on a site on day one, the boat goes in once at the ramp, and the days sort themselves out between the water, the pool and a line cast off the bank in the evening.
Thousand Trails Lake Gaston, the wooded resort at Littleton
Thousand Trails Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort spreads through heavy woods off Fleming Dairy Road, which keeps the sites shaded and puts the boat ramp and dock slips down at the water. There's a swimming pool and a mini golf course for the afternoons the kids have had enough of the lake, and anyone with a rod can fish right from the shore.
The resort is open from early April to the start of November, so the lake week is a spring-to-fall trip. Summer brings the boats and the heat, and the spring and fall weeks are quieter on the water.
On a day the wind keeps the boats tied up, Roanoke Rapids lies downriver with the Roanoke Canal Trail, open dawn to dusk along a stone-lined canal bed from 1823 and its tow path under the trees. Start at the Roanoke Rapids Lake day-use park, where bald eagles and osprey work the water, walk toward River Falls Park at Weldon, and head back to the rig at Littleton for supper.
Kerr Lake, the next big reservoir up the Roanoke, gets its own rig week from the Corps campgrounds on the Durham RV page, and Medoc Mountain and Kerr's state recreation areas are covered from Durham as well.
Rig length, hookups and delivery at Lake Gaston
The Littleton sites take rigs up to 38 feet, so a family-size Class C or a mid-length trailer fits, though the trees leave only a limited number of pull-throughs and you should expect to back in. Hookups vary by site, with full hookups on select ones, and those are the sites to ask for in July and August when the air conditioner runs all day. Two people who'd rather not thread a long rig between the trees can size down to a campervan from the North Carolina listings.
A lot of the travel trailers listed around the lake arrive the way the boat does, on someone else's hitch, with the owner delivering the trailer to the site and setting it up so the family never tows. Whether a listing offers that is up to its owner, so check each one, and the trailer still has to fit the resort's length limit on a site held in your name.
On the Virginia shore, Lake Gaston Americamps at Bracey posted a notice that it is temporarily closed after an electrical fire and a water-system failure, with no firm reopening date as of October 2026. The Club Resort at Lake Gaston at Gasburg is a membership resort that also sells camping nights to others, though its reservation page is built for members.
