Space Camp week in Huntsville, then Wheeler Lake

Families come to Huntsville for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, and in a motorhome the rockets and Space Camp stretch into a week. After the museum days, the Tennessee River takes over, with waterfront sites at Joe Wheeler State Park and the wave pool at Point Mallard in Decatur.

The Rocket Center, Wheeler Lake and Point Mallard by motorhome

Space Camp week in Huntsville opens under a skyline, the rocket park at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center towering over the parking lot before anyone has unbuckled. Inside, a Saturn V lies on its side under the hall roof, and walking its length is a small hike of its own. Families come back day after day, Space Camp for the kids who are enrolled and the museum for everyone else, so the motorhome version of this trip is a parked week with one base and a lot of rocket days.

The center's own RV park closed for good on Dec. 31, 2023, so the base is north of the city at Sharon Johnston Park in New Market. The Madison County campground has 56 sites, each on an asphalt pad with water and 50-amp power, as of September 2026. Huntsville summers are hot and stormy, and a family closed up in a motorhome wants the air on through the night and through the afternoon storms.

Sharon Johnston books by phone through its campground host, and that call comes before you reserve the motorhome. The county doesn't post a length limit, so ask whether your rig fits while you have the host on the line. Then roll in the evening before the first museum day, so the rig is level, plugged in and cool by the time anyone has to be up for Space Camp.

Monte Sano State Park, on the ridge above Huntsville, makes an easy afternoon off from the museum. Lake Guntersville lies south down US-431, and Little River Canyon and DeSoto State Park are farther out. All three are written up on Huntsville's campervan page, which is also the smaller rental for two people, or for a family whose rig the Sharon Johnston host can't fit.

One weekend each August, Huntsville Hamfest fills the Agribition Center's hookups with ham radio operators, and those rigs compete with Space Camp families for the same rentals and the same pads. Alabama's other event weekends, the Talladega races and Auburn gameday, are on the Alabama RV page.

Joe Wheeler State Park on Wheeler Lake

West of Huntsville the Tennessee River backs up into Wheeler Lake, and the waterfront sites at Joe Wheeler State Park put the shoreline right outside the door. Boats running the Great Loop, the long circuit around the eastern half of the country, tie up in the marina slips off the lodge shore. Through the warm months the marina and the beach are where the afternoons go.

The park makes the second half of a Huntsville week, or the whole of it for families who'd rather spend the days in the lake than in the museum. Of the park's 116 campsites, 110 have full hookups, and most fit any size camping unit, as of September 2026. Summer weekends fill, so reserve through Alabama State Parks before you book the motorhome.

Point Mallard in Decatur

Point Mallard's campground loops sit in the shade, and the wave pool is a walk from your site, which settles what the kids are doing every summer afternoon. The water park keeps a seasonal calendar while the campground stays open all year, so Decatur also holds up as a parked week once the pools close. All 217 sites have water, sewer and electric, as of September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you still camp in an RV at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville?

No, the center's own RV park closed permanently on Dec. 31, 2023. For a hookup base during a Space Camp week, Madison County's Sharon Johnston Park in New Market has water and 50-amp power at all of its sites. Joe Wheeler State Park and Point Mallard in Decatur have full-hookup sites farther west.

Where can you dump RV tanks on a Huntsville trip?

At your site, if you book one with sewer. The modern sites at Sharon Johnston Park have septic hookups while the rustic ones have water and 50-amp only, Joe Wheeler State Park's full-hookup sites include sewer, and Point Mallard in Decatur has sewer at its sites plus a dump station. The Agribition Center's Hamfest hookups have no dump station, so arrive there with empty tanks.

How does Huntsville Hamfest affect RV camping that weekend?

It takes the Agribition Center's hookups for one weekend in August, and it pulls rigs and pads from the rest of the city at the same time. Hamfest's camping page lists about 28 water-and-electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service and no showers, assigned in the order requests arrive, as of September 2026. If your Space Camp week overlaps it, reserve the pad and the motorhome early.
