Kalamalka Lake goes turquoise and jade in the summer heat, and you swim it off Kal Beach at the north end or from the pocket beaches below Rattlesnake Point. The van sleeps 11 km south at Kekuli Bay, three terraced loops on the west shore with a lake view off every gravel pad. Summer weekends book up early here, so reserve as soon as your dates open.
The beaches are where the day goes. From the Yellow Gate lot the paved Juniper Trail drops 1.5 km to the twin sand of Jade and Juniper bays, then climbs to the viewing platform on Rattlesnake Point. Cosens Bay is the long sand at the end of the grassland road, a 2.5 km walk in with no vehicle allowed down at the beach.
Shade is thin on the Kekuli pads and the days run hot, July highs near 28 C, so the evening lake breeze earns its keep. By midsummer a Category 1 campfire ban is routine across this basin, though cooking stoves stay legal.
Ellison Provincial Park
Ellison is the shadier lake night, forested benchland on the northeast shore of Okanagan Lake where the shore breaks into rocky headlands and sheltered coves. Otter Bay holds western Canada's only freshwater dive park, and the buoyed beaches stay quieter than Kal. You reach it by turning onto 25th Avenue at the main downtown Vernon intersection, then following Eastside Road 16 km from the highway junction.
The 71 sites sit under mature Douglas fir and ponderosa with no hookups, so treat this as a shade-and-coves night rather than a second Kalamalka. Bigger rigs should note the pads are tight, since BC Parks warns that units over 50 feet hit narrow entries and low branches. For a larger motorhome, size up on the Vernon RV page.
Okanagan Rail Trail
The best day from the Kekuli night is the Okanagan Rail Trail, which crosses the campground near the water and runs the west shore of Kalamalka on a crushed-aggregate grade with the lake below you. It is flat and easy, not a Kelowna city ride and not the Myra Canyon trestles. In summer, leave the van and park for the trail in the Regional District lot above the campground off Highway 97, not the campground loops.
Silver Star is the one trip that leaves the water, up Highway 6 and Silver Star Road to the summer bike park, or the powder once the lake parks close for winter.
For the west shore of Okanagan Lake, Bear Creek and Fintry run off Westside Road out of West Kelowna. South down the lake, Skaha and the Naramata benches belong to Penticton, and the dry-belt lakes to the northwest run through Kamloops.
