A parked week on Mission Bay and a winter week in Anza-Borrego

Mission Bay is flat water, the bay path and a week with the motorhome parked at the water's edge, with SeaWorld and the Zoo as easy outings. From October into spring the same rig heads over the mountains to the Anza-Borrego desert, and a motorhome from Seattle can finish its coast run here in the winter sun.

Where a San Diego motorhome spends the week

By the second morning on Mission Bay, the week has its routine: coffee with the bay flat and bright past the picnic table, bikes out on the bay path, SeaWorld or the Zoo if anyone wants an outing. The rig stays plugged in and level at the water's edge all week while everyone else comes and goes, and by evening the site fills back up with sandy shoes and dinner under the awning.

Two parks put a motorhome right on that water, Campland on the Bay and Mission Bay RV Resort. Full hookups at the site are what make the week easy for a family. The air conditioning carries everyone through the hot part of the afternoon, the tanks never force a move, and nobody breaks camp until checkout.

Campland on the Bay and Mission Bay RV Resort, on the water

Book the site before the rig, because the site you hold decides how long a motorhome you can bring. At Campland, the pull-through sites take rigs to about 42 feet as of September 2026, and online reservations open up to two years ahead for stays under 31 days. Mission Bay RV Resort has pull-throughs too, plus extra-long sites that take rigs up to 45 feet.

Once the site is yours, the rig can come to you. Campland's rental page says most rental companies deliver to the reserved campsite, set up the hookups and collect the RV at the end, and it lists local partners. Whether a particular rig comes that way is up to its listing, so check before you book. A towable delivered and set up by its owner means nobody in the family tows anything.

Silver Strand State Beach in Coronado has an RV-only lot of its own, and a couple who'd rather take that beach night, or one at San Elijo in Cardiff, in a smaller rig can size down to a San Diego campervan.

Anza-Borrego in winter, from Borrego Palm Canyon and Borrego Springs

From October into spring, the same rig goes east over the mountains to Anza-Borrego for a desert week. The campground loop at the mouth of Borrego Palm Canyon sits in the shade of palms, and at dusk the desert floor cools off fast while the sky goes dark enough for real stargazing. Days go to the park, and nights come back to the hookups.

Borrego Palm Canyon's full-hookup RV sites open for reservations six months ahead as of September 2026, so a midwinter week gets booked in summer. For a longer snowbird stay, The Springs at Borrego RV Resort in Borrego Springs has full-hookup pull-throughs up to 80 feet, with the same dark sky over the rigs at night.

The south end of the desert belongs to the mountain-and-desert loop on the El Cajon RV page.

Seattle to San Diego down the Pacific coast in winter

Down the Pacific coast from Seattle, the Northwest rain gives way to winter sun by the time the road reaches San Diego, a run El Monte RV maps out as a winter trip. Save the last nights for a site on Mission Bay, where the rig can finally sit still after the drive south. El Monte RV runs one-way rentals that pick up in one city and drop in another, so a motorhome from Seattle goes back at El Monte's San Diego branch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Mission Bay RV parks in San Diego have full hookups?

Most sites do, but not every site at Campland on the Bay. As of September 2026, Campland's FAQ lists 411 full-hookup sites alongside 150 water-and-electric sites and 18 dry ones, so ask for full hookups when you book a week. Mission Bay RV Resort offers full hookups with water, sewer and electric at its sites.

Is Anza-Borrego a good summer RV trip from San Diego?

No, the desert east of San Diego is an October-to-spring trip in a motorhome. Summer highs reach 125 degrees, and the Borrego Palm Canyon dump station closes from June through September. In the cooler months, a full-hookup site at the campground plus the open dump station covers a whole week.

Which RV rental depots serve San Diego for one-way and round trips?

El Monte RV's San Diego branch is in Santee, at 8665 Mission Gorge Rd, about 20 miles from the airport according to its own listing, and it is the San Diego end for El Monte's one-way rentals. Cruise America has dealers in Lakeside and Spring Valley that rent round trip only.
