Detroit Lake is nine miles of reservoir under forested Cascade slopes, and from a campsite on the shore that is nearly the whole view. The one sound that carries after dark is a log truck's engine brake echoing off OR-22 somewhere down the canyon. The water is flat by morning, and the only plan is how long to stay out on it. Salem families come up for the week and leave the rig on one site until it's time to go home.
The drive there follows OR-22 east of Salem up the Santiam Canyon, the same highway the log trucks use, until the forest closes in and the lake opens up. Back in town, a hookup resort on the other end of OR-22 handles the first night and the Silver Falls days.
Detroit Lake State Recreation Area and the Santiam Canyon
Days settle into a pattern fast. Mornings go to the water and afternoons to the shade of the site with the air on, and one day midweek heads back down the Santiam Canyon so everyone sees something besides the lake. In a dry year the reservoir drops through late summer, leaving a wide band of bare bank between the campsites and the waterline.
Oregon State Parks runs the campground, with 107 full-hookup sites and 68 more on electricity and water. That's the booking to lock down before anything else. Reserve the site first and the motorhome second, because the pad you land decides which rig makes sense.
Plan the tanks around one fact: the park has no dump station. A full-hookup site's sewer connection carries the week, but an electric-and-water site leaves you driving full tanks to the nearest dumps in Salem or Sisters, about 55 miles away. The dump at Fisherman's Bend is closed indefinitely as of September 2026.
When the state loops are full, Santiam Flats and Hoover are Forest Service campgrounds on the same lake, and the Forest Service takes reservations through Recreation.gov. Check each site's hookups and length on the listing before you bring a long rig.
Premier RV Resort in Salem, with Silver Falls by day
Douglas-fir shade and a pool make Premier RV Resort the easy Salem night, whether it's the evening before the lake or a few days of valley trips. The resort has full-hookup RV sites out on the Salem-Dallas Highway, the western stretch of OR-22, and it takes reservations, so ask about site length when you call.
The valley day to plan around is Silver Falls State Park, where the trail runs behind South Falls and its 177-foot curtain of water. The park keeps 48 electric sites with water and a dump station on site if you'd rather sleep there. Couples who want the park as its own overnight in a smaller rig will find it covered on Oregon's small-rig page.
The Willamette Valley wine week, parked at Champoeg, is written up on the McMinnville RV page. For the coast, Crater Lake and Mount Hood, the Oregon RV page sorts the state by trip.
