A paved site at Boyd Lake looks across the reservoir to Longs Peak and the whole line of the Divide, with flat prairie still under the picnic table. Boyd marks the spot where the plains run out and the foothills begin, so every view west is mountains. Families come up from Longmont for the week, settle the motorhome into the campground and don't move it again until it's time to go home.
The days run slow, with kids out on paddleboards by mid-morning, swims off the beach after lunch and dinner outside while the peaks go orange. Water is low, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife has closed Boyd to boating for the rest of 2026, with the marina shut but hand-launched boats and swimming still allowed as of September 2026. Bring the kayaks and leave the trailered boat at home.
Boyd's campground was laid out for rigs, with 140 paved pull-through sites for vehicles up to 40 feet, 20, 30 and 50-amp electric, and a dump station on site. A family motorhome fits under that cap with room to spare, and the electric keeps the air conditioner running through a hot plains afternoon while everyone is down at the water.
Back in Longmont, Longmont Lodge and RV Park has 30 and 50-amp, water and sewer hookups for a night in town before the Boyd reservation starts, and Visit Longmont also points RVers to the Boulder County Fairgrounds campground. For two people, the ponds at St. Vrain State Park make a shorter trip in a smaller rig, and that one has its own Longmont page.
Carter Lake and Eagle Campground in the foothills
Carter Lake is the second lake of the week, higher up and closer in to the mountains. The county reservoir lies at 5,760 feet, and the foothills close in around the water here instead of opening onto prairie. Some families drive over for a day from Boyd. Others move the rig for the back half of the week and wake up with ridges on every side.
Eagle Campground handles the move easily, with its standard electric pull-throughs listed to 65 feet, so whatever fit at Boyd fits here. Eagle is electric only, so empty the tanks at Boyd's dump station before you leave, and carry the entrance and camping permits Carter requires. Groups traveling in more than one rig can book Sky View, the county's group campground at Carter, which has water and electric hookups.
