On Possum Kingdom Lake, out in the Brazos River canyon country west of Fort Worth, the water is clear and blue right up to the pale limestone bluffs. With a rig, the lake turns into a parked week on that shore, with the boat out in the mornings, swimming in the coves through the middle of the day, and dinner back at the site. Nobody packs up, nobody checks out, and the kids learn the lake cove by cove.
Summer is peak lake season, and the heat is what makes a motorhome with power at the pad the right way to do it. The air runs through the worst of the afternoon while the little ones nap, and everyone is back on the water once the sun drops toward the bluffs. Spring and fall are quieter and gentler, and the coves are still worth the drive.
Possum Kingdom RV Resort, Crystal Cove and Spanish Oaks
The private resorts are set up for a week that never unhooks. Crystal Cove RV Resort rents Waterfront and Island sites alongside its standard ones, which puts the lake right outside the door, and every site type there has 30/50-amp full hookups. Possum Kingdom RV Resort has concrete full-hookup pads at 30 and 50 amps and takes rigs up to 65 feet as of September 2026, so length is never the question for a family motorhome or a long fifth wheel.
Possum Kingdom State Park gives the week a public shore, and its Spanish Oaks loop is the one to book with a motorhome, with water and electric sites at 20, 30 and 50 amps. Shady Grove, the park's shadier loop, takes rigs of 25 feet or less and closes over winter until March. That shorter loop suits a couple more than a family, and a Fort Worth campervan is the size that fits it.
Lake Grapevine and The Vineyards Campground
When there's only a weekend, Lake Grapevine on the north side of the metroplex does the lake trip closer to home. The Vineyards Campground has its own sandy beach, so the kids are in the water before the slide-out is fully out, and the lake stays in view from the site. Sites are full hook-up pull-throughs, which takes the backing-in out of a Friday-night arrival.
Saturday goes to the boat or the beach, and Sunday ends without a long haul home. Grapevine also works as a first night before Possum Kingdom, a short run to learn the rig and its hookups before the longer drive west.
A Stockyards week from Gallagher Acres
In the Stockyards, longhorns walk the brick streets in the cattle drive, and the western-wear shops and saloons fill up after dark. A motorhome turns that evening into a base for the week: parked in town and plugged in, you can catch the cattle drive, head back for a cool afternoon, and return for the night without hunting for a hotel. Gallagher Acres RV Park is near the Stockyards and open year-round, with 50-amp service and room for rigs up to 45 feet as of September 2026.
From the same pad, the dinosaur tracks pressed into the Paluxy riverbed at Dinosaur Valley make the day trip everyone remembers. That park, Benbrook Lake, Lake Mineral Wells and race weekends at Texas Motor Speedway are covered on the Fort Worth campervan page, along with a shorter take on the Stockyards.
