Race weekend in Delaware's capital starts as early as Wednesday, when motorhomes begin rolling into the campgrounds around Dover Motor Speedway and lining up toward a high-banked, one-mile oval of concrete. By Saturday the lots are full, a row of rigs is parked inside the track itself, and the cars on that banking run close enough that the whole campground hears every lap. The race lands in mid-May, and for 2027 that means the BetRivers 200 on Saturday, May 15 and the NASCAR Cup race on Sunday, May 16, according to the speedway.
The Infield Reserve puts your motorhome inside the oval, with the racing going on all the way around you. Golf carts run guests over to the pits, and the sites come with full hookups (power, water and sewer) and 50-amp service, listed at 24 by 50 on the NASCAR weekend camping page.
Outside the oval, the lots open straight onto the track, on paved or grass pads with security around the clock. Champion's Gate is paved with 50-amp electric and the largest listed sites at 30 by 60, and Turn 1 is paved with 30-amp, per the track's lot listings. Trackside, Turn 3 and the numbered lots run dry, which suits a self-contained rig and a family happy to live off its tanks for the weekend.
Pick the lot before the motorhome, because the listed site size decides how long a rig you can bring, and the best lots sell out months ahead. Race weekend also pulls on the same rigs and the same Kent County pads as everyone else's mid-May trip, so reserve the RV as soon as the site is confirmed. If you roll in overnight during race week, the track holds late arrivals in Lot 1 until the campgrounds reopen in the morning, per its event camping page.
Killens Pond State Park for a quiet week in Kent County
Once the track goes quiet, Kent County slows to the pace of Killens Pond State Park, where a family can park the motorhome near the water and stay put for a week. It's the local pick for a parked week, with no grandstand and nothing on the schedule but the pond.
Book the site through Delaware State Parks before you choose a rig, and read the length limit and hookup type on the site listing, since that decides how long a motorhome you can bring. Summer here wants power for the air conditioner, so confirm the site has it when you book. On race weekend the park takes overflow from the speedway lots, which means a mid-May stay there books up on the same schedule as the track.
Delaware's ocean parks, Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore at the Indian River Inlet, plus the Rehoboth beach week, make a separate trip, with the rig facts for each on the Delaware RV page. For two people heading to the beach, a campervan from the Delaware campervan page is the smaller, easier fit. Lums Pond, up by the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal where cargo ships cut across the top of the state, is covered on the Delaware RV page too.
