Through the pine grove at Winton Woods, the campsite looks out on Winton Lake, with the harbor, the boathouse and the snack bar a short walk down the shore. Great Parks of Hamilton County runs the campground on Cincinnati's north side, close enough to downtown that a family or two can leave the motorhome parked under the pines all week and still have the city on the table every day. The harbor fills the slow afternoons, and back at the site the kids argue about whether tomorrow is the zoo or the ballpark.
Those city days usually come down to the Reds and the zoo. Reds home games run from spring into early autumn, so a summer week can fit a game on the riverfront and still end back at the lake. The Cincinnati Zoo is the harder day for a rig, because its visitor page points to lots across Vine Street, Erkenbrecher Avenue and Dury Avenue and says parking can't be guaranteed. The motorhome stays at the campsite that day, and the zoo run happens in a second car or a ride.
Kings Island in Mason is one more day out from the north side, a full day of coaster lift hills and summer lines that ends with the drive back to the pines. Booking Winton Woods for a motorhome
Lock the campsite before you choose the rig. Winton Woods has pull-through and back-in sites with 30/50-amp electric, water and a dump station in the campground, and you reserve through Great Parks' own booking system. The size rule is the gravel pad: the campground policies send any unit that doesn't fit on it to the campground lot, so check the site before you settle on a long motorhome. Two people on a short city trip can skip the question entirely with a smaller rig from the Cincinnati campervan listings.
Fall weekends are the catch. From the last weekend of September through the weekend before Halloween, Creepy Campout Weekends close Winton Woods to regular weekend camping, and the families already booked for the event hold the pads you'd want. An October group can take Winton Woods on weekdays and move the weekend west to Miami Whitewater Forest.
Miami Whitewater Forest on the west side
Miami Whitewater Forest keeps its campground in the woods above a lake and its harbor, west of the city, and it stays open for regular weekends through the stretch Winton Woods gives over to Halloween. The days belong to the water, and the evenings to the picnic table and the fire ring at the site. It suits a slower week than Winton Woods, with downtown farther off and less reason to go.
The campground's 46 back-in sites have 30-amp electric, and the shower house runs from mid-April through the end of October. Every site is a back-in, so whoever drives should be comfortable reversing the motorhome into a wooded spot, and the site books through Great Parks the same way Winton Woods does.
Indian Springs Campground in North Bend
Out on State Line Road in North Bend, Indian Springs lines its campsites along a 16-acre lake, with canoes and pedal boats out on the water and the rig parked a few steps from the bank. Most of the week here happens within sight of the lake, and 47 of its 60 sites sit lakeside.
Every site has electric, water and sewer at 20, 30 or 50 amps, with pull-throughs and big-rig sites in the mix. A large motorhome can stay hooked up all week without a trip to a dump station, which makes Indian Springs the easy pick when the group wants full hookups more than a county park.
