The Badlands Loop Road at dawn, from a Cedar Pass base

Banded buttes turn pink and tan along the Badlands Loop Road at sunrise, and Cedar Pass Campground puts the motorhome right under them for the week. Afternoons run out to Wall and the Minuteman Missile site, and the gravel Sage Creek Rim Road makes a slow day across bison prairie.

Badlands National Park by motorhome, one base and two roads

Bare rock walls stand right behind the motorhome at Cedar Pass, with prairie wind leaning on the awning and a cold that settles in as soon as the sun leaves the stone. By first light those walls are banded pink and tan, and the Badlands Loop Road (SD 240) runs right past the campground. A family can run the whole week from that one pad, out along the road at dawn and back by dark.

Dawn is the drive worth setting an alarm for. Stop at the Door for a short walk out into the wall, then work along the rim toward the Pinnacles while the color slides down the buttes and the shadows still sit deep in the gullies. In the evening the light comes back from the other side, and the overlooks you passed at sunrise turn orange.

Wall is the afternoon, out past the Pinnacles end of the Loop Road. Wall Drug is the roadside sprawl every billboard on the interstate has been pointing at, an easy place to turn kids loose before you fuel up for the drive back. On a late arrival with Cedar Pass full, Wall's private campgrounds are where people look for a pad, with length and hookups to confirm with each one directly.

On the I-90 line nearby, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is worth working into a day in or out: silo and launch-control concrete set flat into the prairie, the Cold War left out in the grass. Then it's back to Cedar Pass to sleep.

Cedar Pass Campground for a motorhome

Rock walls rise right behind the Cedar Pass pads, and that's the view you wake up to all week. The Recreation.gov listing shows electric sites in the Agate and Butte loops and a complimentary dump station in the Group Loop, so the fridge stays on the post through the cold nights and the tanks get emptied without leaving the park.

Book the site before you book the rig. July is the peak month and the campground fills, and because the listing doesn't publish a length limit, ask the park's lodging and campground concessioner about your motorhome's length before you settle on a class.

The Badlands as a quick overnight from Rapid City is covered on the Rapid City campervan page. The Black Hills week that pairs with this one, with its own campgrounds and tunnel clearances, is on the Black Hills RV page, and the hookup base in town is on the Rapid City RV page.

Sage Creek Rim Road and Sage Creek Campground

Sage Creek Rim Road (SD 590) trades the banded walls for open prairie, with bison out on the grass and a plume of dust behind anything moving on the gravel. Give it a slow afternoon, stopping whenever a herd drifts near the road and letting the dust settle before you roll on.

Sage Creek Campground off the rim road is the park's free night, and the Park Service's rules are short: first-come sites, no hookups, and no motor homes, trailers or other RVs longer than 18 feet. That rules out the motorhome most families bring for a week, so the rim road becomes a day out from Cedar Pass and the rig sleeps back on the electric loop. Two people who'd rather have the prairie night than the power post can size down to a South Dakota campervan and check its length against that limit before counting on a site.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Cedar Pass Campground in Badlands National Park close for the season?

Cedar Pass closes in mid-October. Recreation.gov lists the season as late March through mid-October as of October 2026, so a fall trip sits right at the closing edge. Confirm the close date when you reserve, and reservations go through Recreation.gov.

Can you run an RV generator overnight at Cedar Pass in the Badlands?

No. Generators aren't permitted overnight at Cedar Pass, per the campground's Recreation.gov listing. The prairie gets cold after dark, so a site with electric hookup is how you keep the heat and the fridge running through the night.

Is Sage Creek Rim Road in Badlands National Park open after rain or snow?

Not always. The Park Service lists SD 590 as a dirt and gravel road that is open year-round but may close temporarily during or after heavy rain or snow, and may close in winter. In a motorhome, check road status before you leave the pavement.
