Fort De Soto's campsites are shelled pads under oaks and palms, and from one of them the Gulf goes orange through the trees while the motorhome's air hums behind you. The county park spreads across the keys at the mouth of Tampa Bay, out through the bayway toll plaza and over the causeway from St. Petersburg, with water on both sides by the time the campground road begins. Mornings go to North Beach and its long run of Gulf shoreline, and the hottest hours go to a slow lunch in the cool of the rig.
The motorhome doesn't need to move again until checkout, and the one big outing of the week leaves from inside the park. The Egmont Key ferry goes from Fort De Soto's own boat ramp, and the lighthouse on the island shows up from the deck well before the beach does. Hubbard's Marina runs the ferry as about a five-hour trip with three hours ashore, and as of October 2026 pets, alcohol, glass, kites and drones stay on the mainland.
A family motorhome or trailer belongs in the campground's higher-numbered sites. Pinellas County's camping page holds sites 1 through 85 for tents, pop-ups and trailers under 16 feet and opens sites 86 through 236 to all camping units. Every site has water and 30 to 50 amp electric, and the park keeps its own sanitary disposal stations for the tanks. If it's only the two of you, a smaller rig for Florida is the lighter way into the same park.
Book the site before the rig. The county opens reservations six months ahead, January through March fills first, and the dates you land decide which week you rent for. Summer runs hot and sits inside hurricane season from June through November, which is when the pad's electric matters most, because the air runs most of the day.
Grapefruit League weeks in Clearwater, Dunedin and Tampa
February fills the small spring training parks around the bay, the crowd in short sleeves and close enough to the field to hear the glove pop. The Phillies train at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, the Blue Jays at TD Ballpark in Dunedin and the Yankees at Steinbrenner Field across the water in Tampa, so one week can take in three clubs on day trips.
Fort De Soto works as the base, with Clearwater and Dunedin up the Pinellas peninsula and the Gulf waiting back at camp after the last out. Families who'd rather sleep near the stadiums can look at Sun Retreats Dunedin, an RV resort in town, and ask it for pad length and hookups before booking.
Spring training falls inside the campground's busiest months, so the ballpark weeks and the beach weeks compete for the same motorhomes and the same pads. The Phillies and Blue Jays post game dates on their spring training pages, and as of October 2026 neither had the 2027 schedule up.
The Red Sox and Twins train farther south, and the Fort Myers RV page covers that belt, with the Florida RV page mapping the rest of the state's spring weeks. On the Tampa side, Hillsborough River State Park makes an inland night under river shade instead of Gulf wind, and its campground is worth checking with Florida State Parks before you plan around it.
