Your Kalamazoo week can start on the Kal-Haven Trail, the old rail line that leaves town heading west through farmland and woods on its way to South Haven and Lake Michigan. Ride out as far as the youngest legs will go, then turn back and leave the lake end for later in the week.
On a wet day the plan moves indoors to the Air Zoo, a Smithsonian-affiliated aerospace and science museum with over 100 air and space artifacts under one roof. It's the stop Kalamazoo is known for, and the walk from the aircraft to the spacecraft easily fills an afternoon the rain would otherwise have taken.
Each night ends back at Markin Glen County Park, Kalamazoo County's campground on the edge of the city, so nobody breaks camp until the beach. Give the town a few nights for the trail and the museum, then hand the back half of the week to Covert Park on Lake Michigan.
Markin Glen County Park, the base on the edge of town
Book the Markin Glen site before the motorhome. Ask the county parks office what length and hookups that site carries, and rent the rig to match, because the pad decides between a shorter Class C and something longer. If the site comes back short, or the trip is two people instead of a family, the Kalamazoo campervan page plans its nights around Fort Custer.
Late arrivals and a full county campground have a fallback in Kalamazoo RV Park and Campground on West C Avenue, an Outdoor Adventures park with a fishing pond, a creek and wooded sites. It works as the first night while you wait on Markin Glen, or as the whole in-town stretch if the county dates are gone.
Covert Park and a beach week on Lake Michigan
The lake at the end of that trail is the reason to break camp. South of South Haven, Covert Park Beach & Campground holds a quarter mile of beach inside Michigan's Critical Dunes, reached by a paved path or a wooded staircase that turns to boardwalk on the way down to the overlooks. By evening the campground smells of bonfires, and the kids who rode toward Lake Michigan earlier in the week finally get their feet in it.
South Haven, where the Kal-Haven Trail finishes, lies north of the campground. That puts the lake end of the trail within reach for a morning ride, this time pointed back inland toward the farms you passed on the first days.
Developed sites on Covert Park's loops come with electric and water, plus a picnic table and a fire pit. The dump station is on site, so a full week at the beach never needs a run to empty tanks. Reserve through the park's own online system before you settle on a rig.
Van Buren State Park and Warren Dunes State Park share this shoreline and are covered on the Kalamazoo campervan page. Farther north, Holland State Park's Lake Macatawa campground anchors the Holland RV week.
